Ubuntu 8.04 is an open source distribution of Linux that provides users with an easy to use desktop operating system build around the GNOME 2 desktop environment and based on the Debian GNU/Linux OS.
Dubbed Hardy Heron, Ubuntu 8.04 was Canonical’s second LTS (Long Term Support) release, officially announced on April 24, 2008 and discontinued on May 9, 2013, during which it received three maintenance releases for the Desktop flavor and four for the Server edition.
Even if Canonical no longer supports the Hardy Heron operating system, it is still available for download on the official servers, distributed as Alternate, Desktop and Server editions. Both 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms are supported at this time.
Users can run a memory diagnostics test, boot an existing operating system from the first hard drive, try Ubuntu without any change to their computer, as well as to install it directly from the boot prompt of the Desktop Live CD.
On the other hand, the Alternate CD is usually used only to install Ubuntu in text-mode, in case the Desktop CD does not recognize the graphics card of your computer. Also, the Server CD lets users to rescue a broken operating system.
The system comes with a classic, two-panel GNOME 2 desktop environment. Default applications include the OpenOffice.org office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission torrent downloader, Ekiga softphone, F-Spot photo manager, and GIMP image editor.
It is powered by Linux kernel 2.6.24 (with dynticks support and a new process scheduler), X.Org 7.3, PulseAudio 0.9.10, and the GNOME 2.22.1 desktop environment. It includes PolicyKit 0.7, Active Directory integration, KVM integration, and iSCSI support.
The Evolution email and calendar client, Vinagre remote desktop viewer, tsclient terminal server client, Baobab disk usage analyzer, Seahorse passwords and encryption keys manager, Brasero CD/DVD burning tool, Totem movie player, Rhythmbox music player, and Synaptic Package Manager are also included.
