UberStudent MATE is an open source operating system, yet another special edition of the education-oriented UberStudent Linux distribution, this time built around the MATE desktop environment, a clone of GNOME 2.
Available for download as a 32-bit Live DVD
The distribution is available for download as a 32-bit Live DVD ISO image that will work well on either 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (x86_64) computer, but supports only 32-bit applications. The ISO image has approximately 4GB in size and must be written to a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 4GB or higher capacity.
The DVD ISO image includes standard boot options
When booting the Live DVD ISO image from the BIOS of a PC, you will encounter a boot screen from where you can start the live environment with default boot options or in safe graphics mode, as well as to perform a system memory diagnostic test or boot an existing operating system from the first drive.
MATE uses the same two-panel layout used in the Xfce and LXDE editions
As mentioned on the boot screen, in order to access the graphical desktop environment you must first login using the “uberstudent” username without a password on the login prompt.
As expected, the MATE desktop environment uses the same two-panel layout that is used in the Xfce & MATE editions of the distribution, with the same dark theme.
Includes a useful open source applications
The operating system includes useful open source applications, such as the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Deluge torrent downloader, uGet download manager, SMPlayer video player, Audacious audio player and VLC Media Player.
Summing up, the MATE edition of UberStudent is identical in look and functionality with the other two editions of this education-oriented oriented operating system suitable for old computers.
