TurnKey Elgg Live CD is an open source distribution of Linux that provides users with a free and easy-to-use solution for deploying dedicated Elgg servers with minimum effort. It is based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system.

Elgg is an award-winning and open source social networking engine software that features blogging, file sharing, groups, microblogging, networking, and much more other attractive functions. The appliance comes with all of the upstream Elgg configurations, which are installed by default in /var/www/elgg.

Key features include a Postfix mail server for sending email messages to users, such as password recovery, the phpMyAdmin administration front-end for managing MySQL databases, as well as out-of-the-box support for secure connections using the latest SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) specifications.

The appliance features various Webmin modules for configuring Postfix, Apache, MySQL and PHP. The default username for the SSH, Webmin, phpMyAdmin and MySQL components is root, and the default username for Elgg is admin.

It is distributed as two Live CD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (32-bit and 64-bit), as well as virtual machine images for OpenVZ, Xen, OVF, OpenStack and OpenNode virtualzation technologies, supporting only the 64-bit (amd64) architecture.

When installing this TurnKey appliance, users should keep in mind that the phpMyAdmin software listens on port 12322 and uses SSL for secure connections, and the Postfix MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) is bound to localhost.

The installation is text-based and will take only a few minutes, requiring users to choose a disk partitioning scheme and where to install the boot loader. After installation, the first boot configuration process will kick in, allowing users to set up new passwords for the root, MySQL 'root' and Elgg 'admin' accounts.

From the TurnKey Linux Configuration Console you can view the active services for this appliances, as well as to reboot and shutdown the server, or to configure the network interfaces. Don't forget to write down the IP addresses and ports of the SSH, Web Shell, Webmin, phpMyAdmin and SFTP services.
