SymplyOS Cinnamon is a free and open source distribution of Linux, a special edition of the openSUSE-based SymplyOS operating system built around the modern Cinnamon desktop environment, a clone of the GNOME Shell interface, which supports low-end machines or computers with old hardware components.
Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live CDs
The Cinnamon edition of SymplyOS is distributed as Live CD ISO images for the 32-bit (i686) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. They must be written on either CD discs or USB thumb drives in order to boot them from the BIOS of the PC.
Boot options à la openSUSE
Being based on the openSUSE Linux distribution, this operating system features a boot menu that allows the user to start the live environment with default boot options or in failsafe mode, perform a system memory test, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk drive.
Modern and productive desktop environment powered by Cinnamon
Cinnamon is the default and only desktop environment of this openSUSE-based OS. It provides users with a modern and productive graphical session. Be aware though, that if no 3D-enabled graphics card is detected, it will fallback to the GNOME Classic session. In addition, the IceWM window manager is also included.
Includes a standard set of open source applications
Default applications include the Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Cheese webcam viewer, GIMP image editor, Chromium web browser, Evolution email and calendar client, Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger, Banshee media player, VLC Media Player, Gedit text editor, Tomboy note-taking app and the LibreOffice office suite.
In conclusion, the Cinnamon edition of SymplyOS is a great distribution of Linux that uses a very responsive and fast graphical desktop on top of a rock-solid openSUSE base. Also, do not hesitate to try some of the other SymplyOS editions, with the GNOME, KDE3 and KDE Plasma desktop environments.
