Regular Swift Linux0.2.0

4.2/5 11
A free, unique distribution of Linux derived from the Linux Mint Debian Edition GNOME

editor's review

Regular Swift Linux is a simple, free and resource-friendly operating system derived from the GNOME flavor of the Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) distribution. It features the user-friendly IceWM window manager and a great collection of lightweight applications.

The operating system is distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

This is the first and main edition of Swift Linux. It is entitled “Regular” and distributed as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image of 700MB in size, suitable for 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures.

It features a standard boot prompt

When booting the Swift Linux Live CD from the BIOS of a computer, using either a CD disc or a USB thumb drive, users will encounter a boot prompt with a message that notifies them about the state of the boot process, which will happen in exactly 10 seconds.

If you want to access advanced boot options, you can press any key on your keyboard during the 10-second timeout. From the boot menu you can start the live environment in compatibility mode, in case you have an unsupported graphics card, perform a system memory diagnostic test or boot an existing OS from the first disk detected by the BIOS.

IceWM is the perfect choice for Windows 98 nostalgics

As mentioned in the review articles of other Swift Linux editions, IceWM is in charge of the default graphical desktop environment, providing users with a traditional, user-friendly and low on resources interface that is very similar with the one of the Windows 98 operating system.

The OS contains a regular suite of open source applications

Default applications include the Iceweasel web browser, mtPaint graphic editor, Sylpheed email client, Transmission torrent downloader, LibreOffice office suite, ROXTerm terminal emulator, Simple Scan image scanner, GNOME MPlayer video player, Geany IDE, BleachBit system cleaner and Synaptic Package Manager.
