Superb Mini Server or SMS for short is an open source Linux distribution designed from the ground to be used be people who want to deploy a dedicated server manageable through the popular Webmin web-based interface. It was previously known as Slack Mini Server and it is based on the Slackware Linux operating system.

Available for 64-bit and 32-bit platforms

This distribution can be downloaded from its official website or via Softpedia as Live CD ISO images of approximately 500MB in size each, designed to support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.

Boot options

Default boot options include the ability to boot an existing operating system that is installed on the first disk, run the distribution normally with all servers enabled, copy the contents of the CD to RAM and run SMS from there, as well as to run the OS in light mode with all servers disabled.

In addition, it is possible to start the distro normally, but also run a PXE server at the same time in order to boot it over network on other computers, run it as a cluster master node, run it in VGA mode for older machines, as well as to start a system memory (RAM) diagnostic test.

Includes state-of-the-art server-specific software

Being based on the famous Slackware Linux operating system, Superb Mini Server includes state-of-the-art server-specific software, such as Apache web server, SpamAssassin e-mail spam filter, Sendmail mail server, Squid proxy server, ClamAV anti-virus, and iptables firewall.

The distro also includes the TorrentFlux software for those who want to transform it into a powerful BitTorrent client that can be administer from anywhere, as well as the powerful MySQL database server, MailScanner e-mail security system, and CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System).

Bottom line

Summing up, Superb Mini Server is one of those easy-to-use-and-install server operating systems. It uses the latest Slackware and Linux kernel technologies, as well as some of the best server-specific applications.
