A user-friendly version of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution with the Cinnamon desktop

editor's review

Snowlinux Cinnamon is an open source distribution of Linux that uses the astonishing and customizable Cinnamon desktop environment on top of a stable Debian base. The project’s main aim is to provide you with a user-friendly operating system that includes a better software selection, an improved graphical installer, and a modern/productive look and feel.

Distributed as 32/64-bit Live DVDs

The operating system is available for download as Live DVD ISO images of approximately 1GB in size each, which must be deployed to either USB flash drives or DVD discs in order to boot them from the BIOS of your PC. It supports both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures, including non-PAE systems.

Minimal boot options

The minimal boot menu of the Live DVDs will allows anyone to immediately start the live environment (with default options or in compatibility mode, in case some of your hardware components are not recognized by the first boot option), perform a memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk.

Astonishing Cinnamon desktop environment that is both easy-to-use and productive

As mentioned, this Snowlinux flavor uses Cinnamon as its default and only desktop, providing users with an astonishing graphical environment that is both easy-to-use and productive, comprised of a bottom taskbar for quick access to installed apps and interaction with opened programs.

Includes a great selection of open source applications

Default applications include the Rhythmbox music player, Totem video player, LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Transmission torrent downloader, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, as well as Synaptic Package Manager.

Bottom line

Summing up, the Cinnamon edition of Snowlinux proves to be a very good alternative to the Debian GNU/Linux operating system (on which it is actually based). It features an improved bootloader, speed and response, as well as various system improvements that are more than welcome.
