A Linux distribution based on Ubuntu designed for people without an active Internet connection

editor's review

Sahalana, also known as LankaNet Linux, is a free and open-source operating system based off of Ubuntu, the world’s most popular distribution of Linux and loaded with tons of useful applications, as well as out-of-the-box support for all known multimedia formats.

It is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD

Despite the fact that it was created for people that don’t have an active or high-speed Internet connection, this Ubuntu remix is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 3.5GB in size, which means that they must download a very big file in order to use the operating system.

It has been designed as dual-arch ISO image that will run well on either 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (x86_64) computers. Keep in mind though, that you must write the ISO image to either a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

The ISO image features a standard boot menu

Being based on Ubuntu, the ISO image features a standard boot menu that allows the user to start the live system with default boot options or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, perform a system memory test, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk drive detected by the BIOS.

Beautiful and modern graphical desktop environment powered by Unity

The default desktop environment of Sahalana Linux is Unity, offering the same beautiful and modern desktop experience as Ubuntu. It comprises of a top panel and a dock (application launcher) located on the left side of the screen.

The distribution includes tons of software packages

As mentioned, the main emphasis of this distribution is on the number of applications it includes, in order to help people with slow Internet connections or a limited data plans. It includes audio and video players, email readers and Internet browsers, audio and video editors, office suites, and much more.
