Slax KillBill Edition is an open source and freely distributed operating system based on the Slackware Linux distribution and designed from the ground up to be used for installing/testing various Windows applications, thanks to the pre-installed Wine software.

Availability and boot options

The distro is available for download as a single Live CD ISO image, engineered to be deployed on a USB thumb drive or written to a blank or RW CD disc. Supported architectures include 64-bit and 32-bit.

It features a minimal boot prompt that basically allows users to press the Enter key to start the live environment. In addition, pressing the F1 key will enable users to pass some special parameters to the Linux kernel, in case they have special needs.

Usage and installed apps

By default, users will be dropped to a shell prompt, where they have to login using the root username and toor password. Once logged in, you should type the startx command to enter the graphical user environment powered by the KDE desktop.

It is also possible to start a graphical session that uses the minimal and lightweight Fluxbox window manager, as well as to use only the Midnight Commander two-panel file manager for managing your system.

Default applications include the Konqueror web browser, KMail email client, Kopete instant messenger, Akregator RSS feed reader, KPPP Internet dial-up tool, JuK music player, K3b CD/DVD burning software, and KPlayer media player.

In addition, it comes with the KWord word processor, Kontact PIM tool, KSpread spreadsheet editor, KolourPaint digital painting tool, KPDF PDF document viewer, Kuickshow image viewer, as well as various board games.

Bottom line

All in all, Slax KillBill Edition is a beautiful and easy-to-use GNU/Linux distribution that allows anyone to test various Windows application on the fly, without having to install anything on their computers.
