PrRescue is a free and open source distribution of Linux based on the Gentoo Linux operating system and tailored for system administrators who are looking for a live system rescue CD for recovering lost data from broken OSes, supporting the NILFS2 and Btrfs file systems.
Available as minimal Live CDs for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms
The distro can be downloaded via Softpedia or from its official website (see link above) as two Live CD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (32-bit and 64-bit). These ISO images can be written to CD discs or USB flash drives in order to boot them from the BIOS of a PC.
The boot options are very important on a rescue CD, as this is its main feature. By default, the user is presented with a minimal boot prompt where he or she can press the Enter key to access the interactive boot menu, which allows them to start the live environment or perform a memory diagnostic test using the Memtest86+ utility.
No graphical desktop environment
It takes some time for the live environment to start, as it needs to load a plethora of drivers for all kinds of hardware. It will also require you to select a keyboard layout. In the end, the user will be dropped to a shell prompt where he or she can run various commands.
There's no graphical environment on this operating system, which means that you will have to possess some basic Linux command-line knowledge to use it for rescuing broken OSes and recovering lost data from damaged partitions.
Summing up, PrRescue's main goal is to always provide users with the latest Linux kernel and Gentoo packages in a minimal Live CD ISO image. We strongly believe that a minimal desktop environment will be a plus this system rescue CD.
