A custom edition of the Porteus Linux operating system, using the Razort-Qt desktop environment. #Porteus Linux #LXQt desktop #Linux distribution #Porteus #LXQt #Linux
Porteus LXQt is a freely distributed operating system based on the well known Slackware Linux operating system and built around the LXQt desktop environment, a clone of KDE3.
Porteus Linux will provide users with a modern operating system that boots extremely fast, supports multiple languages, includes its own Software Center application for installing, updating or removing packages, and a unique dependency-resolving package manager.
This edition is distributed as two hybrid Live CD ISO images that be used as-is, in persistent mode, or installed on a local disk drive. The ISO image can be deployed on a USB thumb drive or written to a blank CD disc.
When booting the live environment from the USB stick, users can save configurations of various applications and downloaded documents, which allows them to reuse the boot medium as many times as they want to.
The boot menu is identical with the ones from other Porteus editions, allowing users to boot an existing OS, access the PLoP boot manager, initialize a PXE server, drop to a shell prompt, start a fresh session erasing existing persistent ones, and copy the live environment to RAM (requires at least 1GB or system memory).
The default desktop environment is powered by Razor-qt, which is comprised of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen from where users can switch between virtual workspaces, launch applications, access the main menu, and interact with the system tray area and running apps.
Default applications include the Trojitá email client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Qmmp audio player, SMPlayer video player, VLC Media Player, WinFF video converter, SpaceFM file manager, Transmission BitTorrent client, uGet download manager, and Leafpad text editor.
Porteus LXQt is an interesting Linux distribution. It boots very fast, includes all the applications you need on daily basis, and does not require high-end hardware components. It is yet another perfect solution for reviving your old laptop or PC.
What's new in Porteus LXQt 5.0 RC1:
- Slackware updated the pkgtools package which moved all package info files to /var/lib/pkgtools/packages. A symlink was left at /var/log/packages
- Major version updates have been made to icu, glibc, gcc, mesa, xorg-server
- We have finally managed to completely replace python2 with python3 for all desktops. This means python2 is no longer in our default package list.
- pauth now acts as our authorizing agent in place of the various other graphical su applications.
