A ready to use, free and Open Source Linux operating system based on the Ubuntu OS

editor's review

Mozillux is an open source operating system derived from the Ubuntu Linux distribution and built around LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), whose main goal is to promote Mozilla software.

Available as an archived dual-arch Live DVD

The distribution is available for download as an archived dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 2GB in size, deployable on either 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms.

The ISO image is archived because it includes a tool that will help you to easily write it to a USB flash drive of 2GB or higher capacity. The MD5 file and some detailed instructions are also included in the zip archive.

Boot options

When the user boots the Live DVD from the BIOS of a computer, he or she will have to choose a language for the live environment (supported languages include English, German, Spanish, French and Italian), as well as to choose a boot options from the boot menu.

Default boot options include the ability to start the live session in persistence mode or in safe mode, as well as to start the graphical installer directly. An interesting option is the ability to run on either PC or Mac computers.

Clean and simple graphical desktop environment powered by LXDE

As mentioned, LXDE is the default and only desktop environment of this Ubuntu-based operating system. It comprises of a single panel located on the upper part of the screen, from where the user can launch application, interact with running programs, as well as to cycle between virtual workspaces.

Includes a wide range of open source applications

Default applications include the HomeBank personal finance manager, LibreOffice office suite, Bluefish HTML editor, Geany IDE, SeaMonkey all-in-one Internet suite, Synaptic Package Manager, Folding@Home, KeePassX password manager, Xpad note-taking app, PCManFM file manager, Pinta digital painting tool, XnView image viewer, Mozilla Firefox web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client.

Bottom line

In conclusion, Mozillux is a great Linux OS if you are a Mozilla fan. It includes all the Mozilla applications embedded in a feature-rich graphical desktop environment that is ready to use by novices and experienced users alike.
