An edition of the Linux Royal distribution that features the KDE desktop environment

editor's review

Linux Royal is an open source and free Linux operating system based on the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, but without the Unity user interface. Instead, it features multiple edition with the GNOME, Cinnamon, Xfce and KDE desktop environments. As its name suggests, Linux Royal KDE is built around the modern and eye-candy KDE SC desktop environment.

Distributed as Live DVD for both 64-bit and 32-bit platforms

The operating system is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (64-bit/amd64 and 32-bit/i386), which can be burned onto DVD discs or written to USB flash drives of 2GB or higher capacity.

The standard, yet beautified boot loader of the Live DVDs will allow the user to start the live environment with default settings or in safe graphics mode, run a memory test, boot from the first disk, as well as to install the operating system without testing it, which is something that we don't recommend.

Futuristic desktop experience with a two-panel layout

The KDE SC desktop environment in Linux Royal has been highly customized to provide users with a futuristic desktop experience that uses a two-panel layout, a system monitoring widget and a royal blue semi-transparent theme for the entire system.

While the upper panel lets the user to access the minimal main menu, cycle between virtual workspaces, as well as to launch and interact with applications, the bottom panel is mostly used as a dock (application launcher).

It comes with a  plethora of open source applications, among which we can mention Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, FileZilla, Steam for Linux, Mozilla Firefox, DeVeDe, FF Multi Converter, k9copy, Netflix Desktop, VLC Media Player, XBMC Media Center, LibreOffice, UNetbootin, and many KDE specific packages.

Bottom line

Summing up, Linux Royal KDE is one of the most beautiful KDE-based Linux distributions that we've ever seen. It is a stable and reliable operating system that uses the latest technologies from Debian and Ubuntu.
