Kubuntu For Linux

Welcome to the Jaunty Jackalope edition of Kubuntu, a free and open source distribution of Linux based on the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, and built around one of the most beautiful and productive desktop environment for GNU/Linux platforms, KDE Software Compilation.

The Kubuntu 9.04 release was announced by Canonical on April 23, 2009 along with other Ubuntu flavors, and supported until October 23, 2010. It can be downloaded as Desktop CDs and Alternate CDs for the 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms.

The boot loader of the Desktop CD edition is unchanged in functionality, allowing the user to try the operating system without installing it, boot an existing OS from the first drive, perform a memory test, as well as to check the disc for defects (only if using a CD media) or install the distro without testing it, which is something that we do not recommend.

This Kubuntu release comes with a beautified KDE desktop environment, which now uses a bluish taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen from where the user can easily access the main menu, launch applications, cycle between virtual desktops and interact with the functions implemented in the system tray area or opened programs.

Default applications include the Dolphin file manager, Amarok audio player, Konqueror web browser, Kontact personal information manager, Kopete instant messenger, Okular document viewer, OpenOffice.org office suite, Gwenview image viewer, KMail email client, Akregator news reader, Dragon Player video player, K3b CD/DVD burning software, and Konsole terminal emulator.

Overall, Kubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) proves once again that it can be a very stable and reliable operating system, despite the fact that many people don't like the new look and  feel of the KDE desktop environment. It is no longer supported and has been archived for historical references purposes only.
