Welcome to the Edgy Eft edition of Kubuntu, a free and open source Ubuntu-derived operating system that uses the latest KDE (K Desktop Environment) and Linux kernel technologies to provide users with a modern and powerful OS suitable for high-end machines.
Distributed as Desktop/Alternate CDs for three architectures
Kubuntu 6.10 was officially announced on October 26, 2006 and supported with security enhancements and software updates until April 26, 2008. It is available for download as Desktop and Alternate CD ISO images, supporting the 32-bit, 64-bit and PowerPC architectures.
The Desktop CDs feature the same boot loader that was found in the previous release of the operating system, allowing the user to start the live environment with default options or in safe graphics mode, run a memory test, boot from the first drive, and check the bootable medium for defects.
Still using KDE 3 with a great collection of applications
The KDE 3 desktop environment is still used in this Kubuntu release, providing users with the same modern and productive graphical session comprised of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where the user can access the main menu, launch apps and interact with running programs.
Among the preinstalled applications, we can mention Kopete instant messenger, OpenOffice.org office suite, K3b CD/DVD burning software, Kaffeine media player, Amarok audio player, digiKam photo management software, Gwenview image viewer, Konqueror web browser, Konversation IRC client, KTorrent torrent downloader, Akregator news reader, Adept package manager, KsCD Audio-CD player, KCron task scheduler, Konsole terminal emulator, and many more.
In conclusion, Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) is yet another stable and reliable distribution of Linux that provides users with a productive, modern and desktop oriented operating system suitable for high-end systems. Today it is no longer supported and archived for historical purposes only.
