GoblinX Micro Edition For Linux

As its name suggests, GoblinX Micro Edition (g:Micro) is a special edition of the GoblinX distribution that aims to deliver a minimalist desktop-oriented system for 32-bit computers. It features the Fluxbox window manager and it’s derived from the Slackware Linux operating system.

The Micro edition of GoblinX is distributed as a dual-arch Live CD that has approximately 100 MB in size and runs on old computers supporting the 32-bit (x86) architecture or on modern 64-bit machines. It contains software packages optimized only for the 32-bit hardware platform.

When booting the ISO image from the BIOS of a PC, using either a CD disc or a USB thumb drive (recommended), users will encounter a boot menu from where they can start the live system in graphics or text mode, as well as by copying the contents of the ISO image to RAM (system memory).

It is possible to start a fresh instance of GoblinX, as the default modes use a persistent session that allows you to save configuration files and reuse the bootable medium whenever you want, boot GoblinX faster, change the root password or run a memory test.

As mentioned, the Micro flavor of the GoblinX Linux distribution is built around the Fluxbox window manager, which provides users with a minimalist and ultra fast desktop experience. It comprises of a single panel located on the upper side of the screen, as well as a system monitoring widget.

Being designed from the offset to be as minimal and low on resources as possible, the g:Micro operating system contains a minimal set of applications. Among the most important ones, we can mention the GIMP image editor, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Totem video player, Leafpad text editor, Audacious and XMMS audio players.
