A very fast and lightweight Linux distribution built around the Fluxbox window manager

editor's review

Flux Capacity is an open-source and completely free computer operating system derived from the powerful Arch Linux distribution, based on the Linux kernel and built around the lightweight Fluxbox window manager.

The distro is available for download as a 32-bit Live DVD

You can download this Arch Linux-based distribution as a Live DVD ISO image that contains software packages optimized only for the 32-bit (i386) architectures. Please note that you must burn these ISO images onto blank DVD discs using any CD/DVD burning software, or write them to USB thumb drives of 1GB or higher capacity using the UNetbootin or GNOME Disk Utility (Disks) applications.

Bootloader a la Arch Linux

When booting any of the aforementioned ISO images from the BIOS of a PC, the user will encounter a bootloader that features pretty much the same functionality as the official Arch Linux ISO image, allowing the user to start the live system, run a memory test, run a x86 CPU identification and reporting test, boot from the local drive or reboot the machine.

The graphical desktop environment loads in 5 seconds

To our surprise, the Fluxbox window manager loads in no more than 5 seconds, providing users with a minimal, fast and easy-to-use graphical desktop environment that comprises of a single panel located on the upper part of the screen, a system monitoring widget on the desktop, as well as some instructions about the keyboard shortcuts and the root (system administrator) password.

The OS includes top-notch applications

The operating system includes top-notch applications, among which we can mention the Google Chrome, Midori and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Bluefish HTML editor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, AbiWord word processor, DeaDBeeF audio player, Medit text editor, Mirage image viewer and MPlayer video player.

Bottom line

Summing up, Flux Capacity is an ultra fast computer operating system designed from the ground up to turn low-end machines and computers with old and semi-old hardware components into stable and reliable workstations.
