Fedora 21 Alpha
Distributed in multiple editions, for the mainstream architectures
Fedora is an enormous project with hundreds of developers and tens of thousands of community members worldwide. While the main Fedora edition features the GNOME desktop environment, the project is distributed in multiple editions, with the KDE, Xfce, LXDE and MATE desktop environments.
But these are only the official editions, as there are also various community spins that can be downloaded via Softpedia or from the project’s homepage. It supports the 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) architectures, as well as the ARM platform.
Available for download as Live CDs or installable-only DVDs
Fedora is one of those Linux distributions that are available for download as both installable-only DVD ISO images and Live CD ISOs. The difference between these two ISO products is that the first one includes all the aforementioned desktop environment, and the second one only one graphical interface.
Under the hood and pre-installed applications
As mentioned, Fedora is a Red Hat sponsored project that uses the RPM (RPM Package Manager) project to allow users to install, update or remove software package from the system.
Each Fedora Live CD contains open source applications specific to the respective desktop environment around which the Live CD was built. On the other hand, the installable-only DVDs contain thousands of apps.
In conclusion, Fedora is a really great desktop-oriented operating system that uses the latest upstream Linux kernel technologies and it is distributed in multiple flavors. Keep in mind though, that this listing provides only UNSTABLE releases!
