A sleek, accessible, equitable Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu operating system

editor's review

Emmabuntüs is an open source Linux operating system based on Canonical’s current LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Xubuntu Linux distribution. It is designed to be used on educational environments.

Offers a beginner-friendly Linux computing environment

It provides users with a beginner-friendly Linux computing environment that will help them to learn everything they want to know about the entire Open Source ecosystem. It can be used to refurbish old computers found on various educational institutions and organizations (elementary school, high schools, childcare, or even universities).

A very secure distribution of Linux

For a reason we don't understand, the developers recommend to install the operating system without Internet connection, and then reconnect the Internet cable on the first boot in order to complete the installation. We believe that this is not the case, as Linux is a very secure and virus-free operating system. In addition, the distribution is based on Xubuntu, which uses the lightweight and easy-to-use Xfce desktop environment.

Distributed as 64-bit/32-bit Live DVDs

The Live DVDs allows users to test the distribution before installing it. However, you will need to configure your keyboard, activate the dock (application launcher), and install non-free software like multimedia codecs and Adobe Flash player plugin before you can use it.

Default applications

Default Internet applications include the Chromium and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, FileZilla FTP client, Pidgin and Empathy instant messengers, qBittorrent and Transmission torrent downloaders, gPodder podcast client, Ekiga softphone. On the multimedia front, we can find popular open source applications like Audacious, Audacity, Brasero, Clementine, GNOME MPlayer, Kaffeine, Kdenlive, OpenShot, RecordMyDesktop, Rhythmbox, VLC Media Player, WinFF, tuxguitar, Radio Tray, K3b, gmusicbrowser, and EasyTAG.

Additionally, users will be able to manipulate images with the Digikam, fotoxx, GIMP, gThumb, gv, Pinta, Shotwell, Ristretto, YAGF, Inkscape, GNOME Photo Printer, ExpoBlending, and Hugin applications. Two major open source office suites are installed by default in this distribution, LibreOffice and OOo4Kids, an office suite project designed for kids and based on Apache OpenOffice.

Bottom line

Dubbed by its developers “Linux for all,” the Emmabuntüs operating system includes numerous applications for all ages, all genres, and all computing tasks. Because of this, we can’t recommended it for regular Linux users who want a clean and professional operating system.
