A MythTV distribution based on Ubuntu with XBMC added, and a 15 band graphic equalizer

editor's review

Technically, EeeMC is an open source Ubuntu fork that incorporates a Mythbuntu installer, the latest MythTV software, XBMC Media Center and support for a wide range of hardware platforms, all in order to provide users with a complete HTPC (Home theater PC).

Distributed only as a Live DVD for 64-bit architectures

The operating system is distributed as a Live DVD ISO image that supports only 64-bit (amd64) architectures. The 1.5GB in size ISO image must be written on a blank DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 2GB or higher.

Boot options

When the user boots the ISO image from the BIOS of a PC, he or she will be prompted by a boot screen from where you can start the live environment with default boot options, in safe graphics mode, with a CLI (Command-Line Interface) session, in persistent mode or by copying it to RAM (system memory).

In addition, it is possible to check the disk for defects (only if you’re using a DVD media), perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.

A true Home theater PC operating system

Arriving at the login prompt, the user must type the “ubuntu” username without no password in order to access the graphical interface, which will allow you to get a glimpse of what this Linux distribution can do.

EeeMC is a true Home theater PC operating system that includes MythTV, XBMC Media Center with the RadioTime plugin, PulseAudio 15-band graphic equaliser, Tor Browser Bundle, FlareGet download manager and Super-Boot-Manager splash screen creator.

Bottom line

With minimal setup requirements the user will have an excellent HTPC (Home theater PC) based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu. It was originally based on the Eeebuntu distribution.
