Xubuntu For Linux

Welcome to the Precise Pangolin edition of Xubuntu Linux, which is also the third LTS (Long Term Support) release of this Ubuntu-derived operating system suitable for old and semi-old computers. It is built around the Xfce desktop environment and includes some of the best softwares for daily use.

Xubuntu 12.04 LTS was officially announced by Canonical on April 26, 2012 and until today it received four maintenance releases. It will be supported with security patches and software updates until April 2017 and can be downloaded as Desktop and Alternate CDs for the 64-bit and 32-bit architectures.

The boot menu of the Desktop CD, which is not hidden by default, will allow the user to try the operating system without installing anything, boot an existing OS from the first disk, run a memory diagnostic test, check the disc for defects (only if using a CD media), and install the distribution.

As usual, the beautiful, modern and fast graphical session is powered by the Xfce desktop environment, which comprises of a top panel and bottom dock (application launcher), which is hidden by default. It still uses a dark-grey theme for the entire interface.

It comes with pretty much the same collection of applications that was available on the previous Xubuntu release, except for the Vinagre remote desktop client which has been removed. Among some of the most popular ones, we can mention Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Pidgin, XChat, Transmission, Leafpad, GIMP, gThumb, Parole, gmusicbrowser, Xfburn, AbiWord and Gnumeric.

In conclusion, Xubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) is a really great operating system that is still used on a wide range of low-end machines, despite the fact that it has been superseded by the Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tuhr) edition.
