xl2tpd For Linux

xl2tpd an open source, freely distributed and minimal command-line software, a daemon for Linux and UNIX-like operating systems that implements the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol, which is also known as L2TP. The project is maintained by the Xelerance Corporation, as a fork of the L2TPd software.

When compared to L2TPd, the xl2tpd software provides extra functionality implemented via numerous patches, especially the ability to run on modern Linux distributions that use DEVFS, as well as support for the L2TP over IPsec protocol. It mainly used on products that include or depend on the Openswan VPN (Virtual Private Network) software. L2TP 3rd level support is also implemented.

To install and use the xl2tpd software on your GNU/Linux machine for implementation of L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol), you will have to first download the source tarball (tar.gz file) from Softpedia, save it on a location of your choice, unpack its contents and open a terminal emulator.

On the terminal window, all you have to do is to type the “make” command, without quotes, to compile the program. Then, you will have to type the “make install” command (without quotes) as root or with sudo in front of it to install xl2tpd system wide and make it available to all users.

After installation, you can run the xl2tpd command from a terminal emulator. Type ‘xl2tpd --help’ to see a usage message and the program’s command-line options. Basically, to use the program, you must specify a configuration file, a secret file and a pid file.

The program is written entirely in the C programming language and it’s available for download as a universal sources archive, so you can manually compile it and optimize it for a specific hardware architecture and/or operating system.
