mtr is an open source command-line network utility that combines the functionality of the 'ping' and 'traceroute' command-line tools into a single network diagnostic software.

mtr is power tool, used by system administrators worldwide to analyze and diagnose a defective network connection. When it starts, mtr investigates the network connection between the current host and a user-specified destination host.

After determining the IP address of each network hop between the machines, mtr sends a sequence of ICMP ECHO requests to each one, in order to determine the quality of the link for every computer.

Because it uses autoconf, mtr should be compatible with various operating systems, but it is mostly used in Linux and UNIX-like distributions.
