Zenoss is an open source, platform-independent and freely distributed enterprise-class network and system management application that provides an integrated software package for monitoring availability, events, performance and configuration across layers (network, servers, applications, environment, etc.) and across platforms (GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, etc.).
Key features include automatic remediation, alerting via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) or email, system log monitoring, event management, automated inventory discovery, change tracking, data collection via SSH (Secure Shell), SNMP, WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation), Syslog, and JMX (Java Management Extensions).
It also offers over 200 community extensions called ZenPacks that can greatly enhance a standard Zenoss installation, supports cloud and virtual infrastructure monitoring, offers management reporting, as well as integration with configuration management tools. It provides VMware ESX monitoring, agentless data collection, and layer 3 network topology maps.
Among other interesting features, we can mention performance monitoring of networks, devices, and events, device performance graphs, performance templates, event notifications and triggers, SNMP monitoring, event classification, auto-clearing, lifecycle, transformation, mapping, and de-duplication, event and fault management and monitoring, device classification, modeling, and discovery, as well as scheduling and exporting of reports.
Zenoss also offers a powerful, easy-to-use web-based interface that features different views (devices, component, administration, event, software) and allows users to effortlessly configure networks, devices, and events. It includes support for custom and multi-graph device reports, maintenance window configuration, and highly customizable web-based dashboard and console.
Being a web-based application, Zenoss is independent of an operating system or hardware platform. It has been successfully tested with several GNU/Linux distributions, as well as with the BSD, Solaris, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Supported hardware platforms include 32 and 64-bit.
What's new in Zenoss 4.2.5:
