Darkstat is an open source, free, small, efficient and portable command-line software implemented in C and designed from the offset to act as a network traffic analyzer. It can calculate statistics about network usage and servers reports via HTTP. It is compatible with any GNU/Linux distribution and other UNIX-like operating systems, such as FreeBSd.

In other words, Darkstat is a packet sniffer that runs as a daemon on your router and collects statistics about your network traffic. It features traffic graphs, embedded web server, reports per host, asynchronous reverse DNS resolution, and supports IPv6.

Darkstat displays ports for each host, is single-threaded, and works well under Linux (Arch Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE, Fedora, Gentoo), BSD (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD), Solaris, AIX and Mac OS X operating systems. Both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures are supported at this time.

To install and use the Darkstat software on your GNU/Linux computer, you must first download the latest version from Softpedia, save the archive on a location of your choice, extract its contents and open a terminal emulator.

In the Linux Terminal window, navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command (e.g. cd /home/softpedia/darkstat-3.0.718) and execute the ‘./configure && make’ install command to configure/optimize and compile the program.

After compilation, you will be able to install Darkstat by executing the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user. Use it by typing ‘darkstat’ in a terminal emulator and hitting Enter.

You will immediately see all of its command-line options, which allow you to specify the network interface to scan, a capfile or a base path, import or export files, as well as to force the program to run in foreground.

What's new in Darkstat 3.0.718:

  • (SECURITY!) Don't chroot() by default. The user must specify a --chroot dir for this to happen now.
  • Bring back the "--base /path" functionality.
  • Add explicit warning about graphs being blank if we can't get local IPs on an interface.
  • Don't crash in timer_stop() if monotonic time stops or goes backwards.
