Clonezilla For Linux

Clonezilla is an open source command-line software based on the ncurses libraries and designed to provide a capable and feature-rich disk and partition cloning and imaging application for Linux and UNIX-like operating systems.

Clonezilla is very similar to the Acronis True Image software, a commercial application that is only available for the Microsoft Windows operating systems, in the way that it saves and restores only the used blocks in a disk drive.

The software supports many filesystems, including EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, FAT, NTFS, HFS+, UFS, minix, and VMFS. A Live CD Linux distribution built around the Clonezilla software is also available for download on Softpedia.

To install the Clonezilla program in your GNU/Linux box, you will have to download the latest source tarball in the bz2 format from Softpedia, free of charge, save it on a location of your choice, unpack it and open a terminal emulator.

Navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command and run the ‘make’ command to compile the software. If it reports that compilation is not necessary, simply use the pre-built binaries from the /bin folder.

As an alternative, we recommend users to install the ‘clonezilla’ package from the main software repositories of their GNU/Linux distributions, as well as to use the Clonezilla Live CD as described above.
