XAR For Linux

XAR application aims to provide an easily extensible archive format.

Important design decisions include an easily extensible XML table of contents for random access to archived files, storing the toc at the beginning of the archive to allow for efficient handling of streamed archives, the ability to handle files of arbitrarily large sizes, the ability to choose independent encodings for individual files in the archive, the ability to store checksums for individual files in both compressed and uncompressed form, and the ability to query the table of content's rich meta-data.

The ultimate goal of the XAR project is to provide an archive format suitable for packaging software created by DarwinPorts. (Note it is a work in progress, so please feel free to make suggestions and report bugs in the xar Bugzilla product.)

What's New in This Release:

� This release includes some build system changes to allow static and dynamic libxar. � Finer grained makefile variables are used to allow build systems to more easily control where things are installed. � Two bugs from the rpm5 project were fixed. � A bug which was triggered when xar is processing a malformed table of contents was fixed. � A bug in the "configure" script was fixed to properly setup acl support on Mac OS X 10.5.
