An Open Source CLI software that lets you work with median networks and Steiner trees. #Steiner trees #Biological sequences #Parsimonistic phylogenies #Steiner #Biological #Sequences
Murka is a free, cross-platform and open source command-line software that helps users to easily solve the Phylogeny problem, simply by using Median Networks. It includes heuristic methods, exact algorithms, as well as a Steiner problem solver.
Murka’s input provides a reversible and an alignment stepmatrix, and the output offers (sub)optimal trees and several combinations of them. The software has been tested under both Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
This application provides a complete coverage of the minimum cost trees. Several similar programs exist, such as AWC Spectronet and Fluxus Engineering Network, but they cost money.
To install and use the Murka software on your GNU/Linux computer, you will have to first download the latest version of the software from Softpedia, save the file somewhere on your computer, and extract its contents using an archive manager utility.
Next, you must open the Terminal app that is installed on your distribution and navigate to the location of the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softpedia/murka-1.3.3-src), where you will run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the software.
Install Murka system wide by running the ‘make install command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user. Execute the ‘murka --help’ command to view the program’s command-line options.
Taking a look under the hood of the Murka project, we can notice that the software has been written entirely in the C++ programming language and that it is fully compatible with all distributions of Linux, as well as with the Microsoft Windows operating systems.
It has been successfully installed on computers supporting either of the 64-bit (x86_64) or 32-bit (x86) instruction set architectures. At the moment, it is distributed only as a universal source tarball.
