Xubuntu is a linux distibution derived from Ubuntu that uses Xfce as desktop manager.

The aim of the Xubuntu community project is to provide a nice Ubuntu desktop experience (even on older hardware) by using Xfce4 as the desktop environment and GTK+ 2 applications wherever possible.

Xfce4 has been supported in Ubuntu's universe by the MOTUXfce team since Hoary and Breezy. For Dapper we want to go one step further and make Xubuntu a sibling of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu by having install and live CD images generated for it.

We haven't decided on a release date, but it should be as close as possible to Dapper's and should use the latest stable Xfce 4.X code (hopefully 4.4 will be release by then)

Requirements:

· One or more computer(s) (can be Intel, AMD, AMD64, whathever);
· One Ubuntu1 Linux CD (or DVD)

Installation:

1. Put the latest Ubuntu Linux install-CD (or DVD) in the proper drive and turn the engines on.
2. At the Ubuntu boot screen, type: server
3. Follow the steps on screen
4. When the system is installed and you are at the (console) login screen, enter your user (choosen in the installation process)
5. Edit the sources.list either:
- With the command sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
- Uncomment the universe repository line (search for universe and uncomment that line)
- Save the file by typing Ctrl-X, Y and enter.

Or:

- With the command sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list
- Uncomment the universe repository line.
- Save the file (by typing ESC key and then :wq )

· Optional: if you are behind an proxy firewall, type the command export http_proxy=http://you.proxy.server:3120/ (if you don't know what this means, go ahead to the next step)
· Run the command sudo apt-get update
· Now is the magic time: type sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
· Optional: if you want to change the screen's resolution, open a terminal and type the command dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
· Optional: want a good-looking graphical login screen (and your computer isn't terribly slow)? Then run the command apt-get install gdm in a terminal screen
· Optional: for a nice update manager, apt-get install update-manager2
· Enjoy your brand new Xubuntu Linux!
