SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) is an open source and 100% free command-line API (Application Programming Interface) that offers standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware.
SANE is comprised of a backend, a daemon, and a scanner finder. It supports flatbed scanners, handheld scanners, video and still cameras, framegrabbers, and much more.
At the moment, several X11 front-ends for the SANE software exist, such as xscanimage and xcam, which can be found in sane-frontends package.
These days, SANE is distributed by default in major Linux operating systems, including Ubuntu, Arch Linux, openSUSE, Fedora or Mageia.
