Puddletag Review by
4.5/5

There's no shortage of good audio tag editors on Linux, however, Puddletag is somewhat different from most of them.

Even though Puddletag's GUI is not something worth writing home about in terms of looks, there's that saying that goes like this - "don't judge a book by its cover."

The thing that makes Puddletag different from most other audio tag editors on Linux is the fact that it uses a spreadsheet-like layout.

We know, the last thing you want to hear about a tool is that it emulates the look and feel of spreadsheet apps, but the way you can edit audio tag in Puddletag is really fast and easy.

The main idea behind Puddletag is to be a valid replacement/alternative for Mp3tag (a very popular audio tag editor for Windows) on Linux. The app allows you to perform basic tag editor actions such as extracting tag information from filenames, renaming files based on their tags, as well as perform a wide range of basci tag editing jobs.

From the Functions menu, you can also do things such as replace text, trim it, perform case conversions. The app also allows you to automate repetitive tasks. It's also worth noting that the app can also help you retrieve covert from Amazon nad Discogs, FreeDB, and MusicBrainz.

Another great aspect of Puddletag is that it supports a wide range of formats. These include ID3v1, IDE3v2 (mp3), MP (mp4, m4a, and so forth), VorbisComments (ogg, flac), Musepack (mpc), Monkey's Audio (ape) and WavPack (wv).

Calling Puddletag a good Mp3tag wouldn't be way out, however, it's worth mentioning that there are a couple of minor differences between the two. You can take a look at the menus section on the app's website to check everything out.

What's new in Puddletag 2.3.0:

  • The usual tag editor features are supported:
  • Extracting tag information from filenames
  • Renaming files based on their tags by using patterns
  • Basic and batch tag editing
