editor's review

XiX Music Player is an open source and cross-platform software project that provides users with a sophisticated music player application. It supports a wide range of audio file formats, as well as a beautiful and modern graphical user interface.

Features at a glance

The application supports the MP3, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, M4A (non-DRM), APE, and OPUS audio file formats, online radio streams, shuffle and repeat, reverse playback and crossfading, themes, playlists, system tray integration, as well as Audio-CD playback and ripping.

It allows users to download and playback Podcasts, shuffle and repeat songs, view lyrics and album art of currently played songs, playback license-free audio streams from the Internet Archive, rate songs, search, copy, delete and rename files.

Another interesting feature is the ability to playback online radio stations using presets and a full featured recording functionality with scheduling capabilities. Furthermore, the application lets users to rip DVD tracks to FLAC or MP3 audio file formats.

The built-in 10-band equalizer supports reverb, echo and flanger effects. It allows users to set custom presets for individual songs. In addition, it is possible to change the ID3 tags of MP3, OGG, FLAC and APE files.

Modern graphical user interface

Thanks to its modern graphical user interface, users will be able to choose their preferred language (English, Italian, French, Dutch, Hungarian, Spanish and Danish are supported at this time), add entire music libraries from local or remote locations, as well as to enable various useful options from the get-go.

It looks different, like nothing we've tested before. While on the left side you can easily switch between Artists, Albums, Playlists, File Manager, Radio, Podcast, Archive and CD views, on the center and right side you can view specific information, depending on the selected mode.

Bottom line

All in all, XiX Music Player is a modern and complex multimedia playback application that supports a wide range of audio files, including Internet radio streams, Audio-CD ripping and encoding, as well as state-of-the-art audio effects and functions. It supports GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Raspberry Pi platforms.
