Xubuntu For Linux

Welcome to the Utopic Unicorn edition of the Xubuntu Linux operating system. It is an open source and freely distributed project that tries to support a wider range of computers than the main Ubuntu release.

First of all , it is very important to mention that Xubuntu 14.10 is now in heavy development, which means that it should not be installed on production machines. The final release will be available for download sometime in October 2014.

It is still distributed as Live DVD ISO images that are getting bigger and bigger with each new release, closing fast to 1GB in size, which means that they can only be deployed on DVD discs or USB flash drives of 1GB or higher capacity.

Once again, the boot prompt is unchanged from previous Xubuntu editions, enabling users to start the live environment with default options and without installing it, boot an existing operating system, run a memory test, check the DVD media for defects, or directly install the distribution (not recommended).

While the panel is still pitch black and the menus are white, the developers removed the bottom dock (application launcher) and replaced the old-style main menu with a more familiar one, similar with the ones used on the KDE or CInnamon desktop environments.

Default applications include the Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, GIMP image editor, Mozilla Firefox web browser, gmusicbrowser audio player, Mousepad text editor, Parole media player, Pidgin Internet messenger, Ristretto image viewer, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, XChat IRC client, Transmission torrent downloader, and Xfburn CD/DVD burning software.

It looks like Canonical listents to its users after all and tries to offer the same great, lightweight, fast and traditional desktop experience that was used a few years ago on this Ubuntu-based operating system suitable for low-end machines.
