Ubuntu is a freely distributed and open source Linux-based operating system designed by human beings for human beings, people who have no previous knowledge of Linux OSes and expect a solid computing experience.
It is based on the well known Debian GNU/Linux operating system and built around the GNOME desktop environment, but using a custom user interface as its desktop environment, called Unity.
Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs
The system is distributed as hybrid Live DVD ISO images, which means that users can download and write them to either USB flash drives or blank DVD discs. Supported architectures include 64-bit (amd64), 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit Mac (amd64).
If you deploy the live ISO images to USB sticks that are larger than 2GB, it is possible to use the live session in persistence mode, which means that you can save certain files or configurations and reuse the media whenever you want.
The boot mediums can be used to try the Ubuntu distribution without installing anything on your computer’s disk drive, start an existing operating system installed on the first disk, run a memory test, as well as to install Ubuntu directly, without testing it (not recommended).
“Trying Ubuntu without installing” is the default choice, allowing users to immediately enter the graphical environment powered by Unity and use the operating system like it was installed on their computers.
Features the brand new Unity desktop environment
The system will prompt users with an informational screen about useful keyboard shortcuts, so they can navigate the system quickly. As expected, Unity is comprised of a top panel and the dock (application launcher).
Default applications include the Nautilus file manager, Mozilla Firefox web browser, LibreOffice office suite, Ubuntu Software Center, Mozilla Thunderbird, Rhythmbox music player, Gedit text editor, Deja Dup backup tool, Transmission torrent downloader, Totem video player, and Shotwell photo manager.
Summing up, this Ubuntu release will be supported for years, during which it will provide users with one of the best selection of open source application, as well as very stable and reliable Linux-based operating system.
