Pangaea-Lubuntu is an open source and completely free operating system derived from the well known Lubuntu Linux distribution and designed to mimic the look and feel of the Unity interface of Ubuntu OS, as well as to provide users with a handful of cross-platform apps.
Distributed as a 64-bit Live DVD ISO image
To use this custom Lubuntu remix, the user must download an ISO image of approximately 2GB in size, which contains the Live edition of distribution suitable only for 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms.
Besides the custom background image, the bootloader includes standard boot entries, such as the ability to start the live environment with default drivers or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, run a memory diagnostic test or boot an existing OS from the first drive.
Modern and different graphical environment
We have to admit that the graphical session is quite different from what we see in our daily routine. It appears to be a highly customized LXDE desktop environment that features a top panel for cycling between virtual workspaces and accessing some system tray functions, and a dock (application launcher) located on the left side of the screen, which mimics the Unity interface.
The main emphasis is on cross-platform applications
The main emphasis of this Lubuntu spin is on the custom Unity-like interface and cross-platform software, among which we can mention VLC Media Player, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Dropbox, Banshee, Pidgin, LibreOffice, GIMP, NixNote2 and Transmission.
Summing up, Pangaea-Lubuntu is a great distro that keeps the lightness of the Lubuntu Linux distribution alive, which makes it suitable for low-end machines or computers with old and semi-old hardware components.
And on top of that, it offers a wide range of cross-platform applications that are available on the GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.
