Medical Linux is an open source and completely free operating system based off of Xubuntu, the Xfce flavor of the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu. It uses Xfce as its default and only desktop environment and includes applications designed for the health industry.
The distribution is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that has been engineered to run well on both modern and old computers, supporting the 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. The user must write the ISO image on a DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 4GB or higher capacity in order to boot it and use it on a computer.
As mentioned, the distribution is built around the Xfce desktop environment, which uses a traditional layout comprised of a single panel. The panel is located on the bottom edge of the screen and designed to allow the user to quickly navigate the main menu and launch applications, as well as to interact with running programs.
The distribution comes pre-loaded with a wide range of open-source applications, among which we can mention the Thunar file manager, GIMP image editor, Leafpad text editor, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger and LibreOffice office suite.
The Transmission torrent downloader, Gwibber microblogging client, Ristretto image viewer, Inkscape vector graphics editor, Calibre ebook library management software, Audacious audio player, SMPlayer video player, XMBC Media Center, Wine and Synaptic Package Manager are also included.
As expected, the best feature of Medical Linux is the inclusion of powerful medical apps, such as the Aeskulap medical image viewer, OpenClinica clinical data management tool, Cycle calendar for women, FreeMED electronic medical record and practice management system, Periodic Table periodic table viewer, as well as the Sofa statistics, analysis and reporting software.
