Lubuntu Review by
5.0/5

Welcome to the Vivid Vervet edition of the Lubuntu Linux operating system, an open source, freely distributed, portable and lightweight distribution derived from the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and built around the LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) graphical desktop interface.

The Vivid Velvet edition of Lubuntu is dubbed 15.04 and it was officially unveiled by Canonical on April 2015, supported with kernel patches, software updates and security fixes until January 2016. It is currently supported for the 64-bit (x86_64/amd64), 32-bit (x86/i386) and PowerPC (PPC) hardware platforms.

The LXDE desktop environment used in this Lubuntu edition looks beautiful and attractive, engineered to be low on resources, thus supported on low-end machines or computers with old hardware components. It boasts a traditional layout comprised of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, which includes Main Menu, Workspace Switcher, Task Manager, App Launcher and System Tray applets.

Among the preinstalled applications, we can mention the AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, PCManFM file manager, Leafpad text editor, Xpad note-taking app, mtPaint graphic editor, Simple Scan image scanner, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Sylpheed email client, Transmission torrent downloader, UXTerm, LXTerminal and XTerm terminal emulators, GNOME MPlayer video player, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, gubcview webcam viewer, Audacious audio player, GParted partition editor, and Synaptic Package Manager.

Lubuntu 15.04 is available for download for free on Softpedia as Live DVD ISO images, supporting the aforementioned CPU architectures. The ISOs are designed to be deployed on either DVD discs or USB thumb drives of 1GB or higher capacity. From the Live DVD boot menu, the user will be able to try the operating system without installing it, start the installation directly, check the media for defects (only if booting from a DVD disc), test their computer’s memory, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk drive detected by the BIOS.
