An Ubuntu-derived Linux operating system built on top of the LXDE desktop environment

editor's review

Lubuntu is an open source Linux distribution derived from Ubuntu and built around the lightweight LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) window manager. This edition was born out of the high demand for an alternative to the Xubuntu Linux operating system, which uses the fancy and fast Xfce desktop environment. Using LXDE instead of Xfce will provide users with the perfect computing environment for older hardware.

Distributed as Desktop CDs and Alternate CDs

It is distributed as a Desktop CDs and Alternate CDs, supporting both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. While the Desktop CDs can be used by anyone who want to test the live environment without installing anything on their computers, the Alternate CDs can be used by advanced users who prefer to install Lubuntu via text-mode or in case the Desktop CDs won’t work for you.

The Desktop CD is also known as the Live CD, which provides users with a boot menu from where they can boot the operating system that is currently installed on their computer, test the machine’s RAM (system memory) for errors, and directly install Lubuntu.

The most minimalistic and snappiest desktop experience

The live session features one of the most minimalistic and snappiest desktop experience found on an Ubuntu-based Linux operating system. Only a taskbar is provided, with the main menu, launchers for the file manager, web browser, a desktop switcher, and the system tray area.

Default applications

The default file manager of Lubuntu is PCManFM, you can browse the web with the Mozilla Firefox application, edit photos with the mtPaint software, AbiWord can be used to edit documents, Gnumeric is there for all your spreadsheet needs, you can download torrents with the Transmission app, send emails with Sylpheed and use the Pidgin instant messenger for chatting with your friends.

In addition to the above, we can also mention the Synaptic Package Manager, Audacious music player, GNOME MPlayer video player, guvcview webcam viewer, Xfburn CD/DVD burning tool, GParted, Leafpad text editor, and many others.

Bottom line

Lubuntu is the perfect Linux operating system for anyone who owns a very old computer, loves Ubuntu, and enjoys the simplicity of the LXDE desktop environment.
