Linux Webstartup Play is a free and open source distribution of Linux built around the controversial Unity desktop environment and based on Ubuntu Linux, the world’s most popular free operating system.
The Linux Webstartup project features three main editions, Play, Whoa and Lite. While the Lite edition comes with the lightweight LXDE desktop environment, the Whoa flavor features the Pantheon graphical environment.
The distribution is available for download as a single and hybrid Live DVD ISO image, which can be deployed to a USB flash drive or written to a blank DVD disc. Supported hardware platforms include 64-bit and 32-bit.
The boot menu is identical with the one found on the original Ubuntu distribution, allowing users to quickly change the language, try the operating system without installing anything, run a memory diagnostic test, boot an existing OS, or install the distro without testing it (not recommended).
It requires at least a dual core processor from Intel or AMD, one of the latest graphics cards produced by AMD, Nvidia and Intel, 2 GB or RAM, and at least 8.6 GB of free hard disk space to install the system.
While the desktop session is identical with the one from the original Ubuntu OS, it features a drop dead gorgeous icon theme. It is comprised of a dock (application launcher) located on the left side of the screen, and a top panel for interacting with running apps and the system tray area.
Default applications include the Darktable RAW photo editor, Gwibber social networking client, Cheese webcam viewer, Mozilla Firefox web browser, GIMP image editor, DeVeDe DVD-Video creator, FileZilla file transfer client, LibreOffice office suite, QuiteRSS news reader, Skype VoIP client, and Google Earth.
Summing up, Linux Webstartup Play is a decent and stable Ubuntu-based operating system designed to be used by users who want a modern and futuristic workstation powered by the Unity interface and the latest open source technologies.
