AnitaOS is an open source and freely distributed independent operating system based on the well known Puppy Linux distribution and designed from the ground up to be as minimal and lightweight as possible, deployable on low-end machines or computers with old hardware components.

Key features include a build as you go DIY (Do It Yourself) system, support for old hardware, a rock solid Puppy Unleashed 4 base, installation video tutorial, a plethora of software packages for everyday use, and comprehensive online documentation.

The system is distributed as a single Live CD ISO image, which can be written to a blank or RW CD disc using any CD/DVD burning software, or deployed to a USB flash drive of 512MB or higher using the UNetbootin or Disks applications.

The ISO image provides users with a minimal boot prompt, from where users can press Enter to start the live environment or the F2 key to view a list of boot options. If you don't press any key, it will automatically boot in 5 seconds.

Before entering the live session, you will need to select a keyboard layout, choose a locale and timezone, as well as to setup the graphics card using X.Org or the VESA framebuffer.

It uses the IceWM window manager that offers a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can access the main menu, launch applications, switch between virtual workspaces, and interact with running programs.

There are only a few applications installed by default on the ISO image, which means that users can add their own programs at a later time. These include the SeaMonkey all-in-one internet application suite, Geany text editor and IDE, SQLiteManager database manager, gFTP file transfer client, Avidemux video editor, Xine and GXine media players, and many others.

Summing up, AnitaOS is a minimal operating system based on the Puppy Linux 4 series and designed to support old hardware components. We strongly suggest to use it if you want to revive really old computers.
