PhoDAV is an open source, freely distributed and cross-platform command-line software implemented in C using the libsoup (RFC 4918) and GIO libraries, and designed from the ground up to provide users with a capable and easy-to-use WebDAV server tailored specifically for GNU/Linux systems, but also compatible with Microsoft Windows.

The program was originally designed as a file sharing mechanism for the SPICE server, but it can be easily integrated into other projects. At the moment, it’s distributed as part of the GNOME desktop environment. Optional digest authentication can be used when sharing a specific directory with the chezdav tool, which is integrated into the project.

To use this software project on your GNU/Linux computer, you must first download the latest version from Softpedia, save the TAR archive somewhere on your computer, extract its contents, open a terminal emulator, navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command, and execute the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the project, as well as to optimize it for a specific hardware architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).

After the compilation process, the PhoDAV project will provide a library and a standalone command, called chezdav, that can be used to easily and quickly share a directory via the WebDAV protocol. The main command of the software is spice-webdavd, whose command-line options can be viewed at a glance by running the ‘spice-webdavd --help’ command in a terminal emulator. Basically, it only allows users to specify the port number to connect to.

To install PhoDAV system wide, do not hesitate to use either the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user. All users on your machine will have access to this program after installation. The latest source code is available via Git.

What's new in PhoDAV 2.3:

  • replace autotools with meson
  • spice-webdavd: switch to GTask
  • chezdav: add --local & --public to specify interfaces to listen on
  • translations updates
