Monkey HTTP Daemon is an open source and small command-line application that provides a lightweight and very fast web server designed especially for GNU/Linux operating systems, supporting 32-bit, 64-bit, as well as ARM architectures.
The software is HTTP/1.1 compliant, provides a C API (Application Programming Interface), supports IPv6 and IPv4 protocols, supports virtual hosts, supports asynchronous networking model, supports indented configuration, and comes with a powerful plugin architecture.
Through plugins, Monkey HTTP Daemon can be extended to provide support for CGI (Common Gateway Interface), FastCGI, SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), UNIX Shell (command-line interface), directory listing, log writer, and much more other attractive functionality.
To install Monkey HTTP Daemon program on your Linux distribution, you must first download the latest version of the program from Softpedia using the dedicated download button above, save the archive somewhere on your computer and unpack it using an archive manager tool.
Then, open the built-in Terminal app. Using the ‘cd’ command, navigate to the location of the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softpedia/monkey-1.5.5), run the ‘./configure’ command to configure and optimize the software for a specific hardware architecture (64-bit and 32-bit are supported).
When you see the “Monkey configuration is done!, to build type 'make' Have fun! ;)” message, it is time to run the ‘make’ command to compile Monkey HTTP Daemon. After a successful compilation process, run the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user or the ‘make install’ command as root to install the software system wide and make it available to all users on your machine.
To use it, simply type the ‘monkey --help’ command to view the usage message and available command-line options, which can be used to specify various things, such configuration files directory, main server configuration file, mimes configuration file, plugins.load configuration file, sites configuration directory, as well as plugin configuration directory. You can set the listener TCP port and the number of workers, as well as to force the program to run as daemon.
