Facebook for Linux is an open source piece of software whose sole purpose is to look and act exactly the same as the official Facebook apps for smartphones powered by  iOS, Android or Windows Phone mobile operating systems.

In other words, it can be considered an unofficial desktop client for the world's most popular social networking service, Facebook. Also known as FB4Linux, the application also supports the Twitter and Google+ social networking services, which can be easily access with a single mouse click.

It features system tray integration, allowing users to hide the main window, as well as to quickly access the Facebook, Twitter and Google+ social networks from within the application. You can contact the developer, like the program's page on Facebook, or donate via the system tray icon.

Under the hood, we can report that the program is written entirely in the C++ programming language, using the Qt GUI toolkit for the graphical user interface. The program is distributed only as source archives, supporting five different colors (Blue, Green, Red, Pink and Gold).

In order to configure, compile and install the application on your GNU/Linux operating system, you will first need to download and extract one of the source archives from the dedicated download section (see above).

Enter the extracted folder and open a terminal. Type the 'qmake' command, without quotes, and hit the Enter key. Next, type the 'make' command, without quotes, to compile the program. When the compilation is finished, you can run the application from the current location or install it system wide using the 'sudo make install' command (without quotes).

Facebook for Linux is a small and straightforward application that needs some final touches here and there, but overall is the only web app-like program that allows you to access your Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts without having to open a web browser.
