Bug 376997 added a stylesheet to top-level images that forces the background to black and centers the image. Old Default Image Style is a Firefox and SeaMonkey extension that removes the stylesheet, returning the background to your configured default and removing the centering.
There are also options for setting a custom background color and for re-centering the image, so if you prefer some combination of the above or a different background color, you can set that too.
