To enter an accented character, type Control-accent, followed by the character, so for á, type Control-' and then a. The only non-intuitive one is ^ for Firefox 2, for which you probably want to type Control->, not Control-^, because Mozilla Firefox has already claimed Control-^ as a shortcut if there are 6 or more tabs open.
This will be most useful to Windows users with English keyboards, but it should work for any OS and keyboard.
The complete list of accents is:
' gives acute
` gives grave
: gives umlaut
^ or > gives circonflex
, gives cedilla
~ gives enye
0 (zero) gives circle.
You can also enter some special characters like ¿ and €.
