Bitnami Apache Solr Stack
Bitnami Apache Solr Stack is a freely distributed and cross-platform software project that greatly simplifies the installation and hosting of the Apache Solr application, as well as all of its runtime dependencies, on desktop computers and laptops powered by a GNU/Linux distribution or either of the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.
What is Apache Solr?
Apache Solr is an open source, platform-independent, free and high-performance search server based on the Apache Lucene project, using JSON and XML/HTTP APIs. Highlights include database integration, geospatial search, full-text search, dynamic clustering, faceted search, hit highlighting and rich document handling.
Installing Bitnami Apache Solr Stack
The Bitnami Apache Solr Stack product can be deployed using native installers, a virtual appliance, a Docker container or cloud images. The native installers were built using BitRock’s cross-platform installer tool and support both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
To install the Apache Solr application on your personal computer, you will have to first download the binary file that corresponds to your computer’s hardware architecture, run it and follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
Host Apache Solr in the cloud
In addition to installing Apache Solr on your personal computer, you can also host it in the cloud, thanks to Bitnami’s pre-built cloud images for the Amazon EC2 and Windows Azure cloud hosting services.
Virtualize Apache Solr on VirtualBox and VMware
Users can also virtualize the Apache Solr application on the Oracle VirtualBox and VMware ESX, ESXi virtualization software, as Bitnami offers a virtual appliance based on the latest stable release of the Ubuntu Linux distribution.
The Bitnami Apache Solr Docker container
While Bitnami does not provide users with LAMP, WAMP and MAMP modules for the Apache Solr application, it will offer a Docker container that helps you virtualize Apache Solr on Linux containers.
