JAFER provides an easy to use visual toolkit built on Z39.50.

The JAFER Project (Java Access For Electronic Resources) aims to produce an easy to use visual toolkit that will allow users to build portals and information sources without having to deal with the technical intricacies of Z39.50.

ANSI/NISO Z39.50 defines a standard protocol for communication and information retrieval between computers, typically over a network. It provides standard ways to search distributed databases, and to retrieve full-text documents, bibliographic data, images and multimedia, and can be implemented on any computer platform.

The JAFER Project (Java Access For Electronic Resources) aims to produce an easy to use, visual toolkit, which will allow users to build portals and information sources without having to deal with the technical intricacies of Z39.50.

A Java based toolkit for building Z39.50 clients and servers funded as part of the JISC DNER programme aimed both at programmers and web developers building resources for teaching and learning.

It is intended that the software will be easily configurable by non-technical users via the GUI interface, or by more advanced users via the XML configuration files and JavaBean properties.
