Scid (Shane's Chess Information Database) is an open source, cross-platform and free graphical application implemented in C++ around the Tcl/Tk toolkit and designed to provide a chess database application that features numerous search and database maintenance functions.

When using the Scid application, users will be able to maintain an entire collection of chess games, to view graphical trends, to search games, and to produce printable reports on openings and players.

Scid has been engineered in such a way that it lets users to analyze games using a UCI or Xboard compatible chess software, study chess endings, as well as to play online on FICS (Free Internet Chess Server).

Installing Scid on your GNU/Linux distribution is an easy task, especially if you’re using the openSUSE operating system or a derivative, as the developer provides native installers for the said OS.

It is also possible to install Scid from the main software repositories of your distro, using the default package manager, or by compiling the program from the source archive distributed here on Softpedia.

After installation, you can open Scid from the main menu of your desktop environment. The application will open both the main window and a small “Tip of the Day” dialog, from where you can learn how to use the program.

Its graphical user interface comprises of a chess board on the left side of the window, the notation and analysis components on the right, as well as the game list component on the bottom of the window.

The application is written entirely in the C++ and Tcl programming languages, using the Tk GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. It supports Linux, Microsoft Windows and FreeBSD operating systems, successfully tested on both 32-bit and 64-bit computer architectures.
