Thick Fighter is a game in which you play a small creature which moves in an environment of solid matter, ladders, and ropes.
There's also explosive matter, which will blow up when hit by a bomb or a missile. What each kind looks like depends on the look of the scene and can be discovered through experimentation.
The Game's Rules
You are a small creature which moves in a scenery consisting of solid matter, ladders and ropes. There are two different kinds of matter. One can be destroyed by explosions (bombs/missiles) and the other is indestructible. There's also explosive matter, which will blow up when hit by a bomb or a missile. What each kind looks like depends on the look of the scene, you'll certainly find out yourself.
You can control your creature by keyboard, joystick or mouse. Which control type is used depends on what you selected in the player dialog. Keyboard control is the default. You use the arrow keys to move around, < AltGr > (or ) for switching the active weapon and < Space > to fire it. If you're using the joystick, the two buttons will take the functions of < AltGr > and < n >.
Movement is quite simple, you should learn yourself. There're only few important things that may not be obvious. If you're in front of an objstacle that is of your height, you can just run against it and your creature will start to climb on it. If the obstacle's height is twice your height, you can pass it by jumping (< Up >-Key) and then climb it by pressing < Left > or < Right >.
Guns, missiles and the flame thrower are used as follows: press < Space > once to take the weapon, then you can aim by pressing < Up > and < Down >, fire it by pressing < Space > again. To pocket the weapon press < Left >, < Right > or < AltGr >. Note that you can't run while aiming. If the selected weapon is bombs, you can throw one by pressing < Space >. How far the bomb will be thrown depends on how long you hold the < Space > key down.
To use the weapons, you need ammunition. You can set the default ammunition for each player in the player dialog. Additional ammunition can be collected during the game (you'll see yourself...). The only weapon you do not need any ammunition for is the "hit" weapon which is selected by default. Note that you won't be able to select any weapon you don't have ammunition for. The weapons you can select are in this order: "hit", shotgun, machine-gun, flame-thrower, bombs, missiles, guided missiles, ray-gun.
Your creature has a "life-value", which is displayed as a green bar on the bottom of the screen for each player. The bar gets shorter and shorter the more you're hit by weapons. As it gets shorter, it will change to yellow, later to red, and finally you will die. You can "refill" your life-value by collecting medical kits which look different depending on the scene's look, you'll see...). If you want to play a death-match, you might want to select "Revive player" in the player dialog which will make the player appear again 5 seconds after he died. You can also change the initial "life-value" for a
player in the player dialog.
Besides the creatures that can be controlled by you, there are also some flying beasts, that I named "Enemies". They look very different in each scene, but they always do the same: they try to get as close to you as possible and shoot at you. You can kill them with your weapons, but be careful, they'll fall down at you and explode if you kill them... You can set the Enemies' life-energy, their speed and the power of their shots in the enemies dialog. You can also set the enemies to be revived 5 seconds after their death for playing infinitely.
The number of Enemies and players you kill during the game will be counted. You'll then be able to watch statistics about you (and other player's) brutality when the game ends.
How to Play...
Thick Fighter does not have a predefined goal like trying to pass levels etc. The goal depends on your definition, it requires your fantasy. The most fun is to play with as many other players as possible (up to 10), trying to kill each other or fight in teams... The game may get much more interesting if you give each player or team different default ammunition. You should select "Revive player when dead" in the player dialog to be able to play those kinds of death-matches. However, if you're playing alone or you don't want to shoot at your friends, you can play against the Enemies and try to kill as many as possible (you should select "Revive Enemies" in the enemies dialog). You can try different combinations of the enemie's speed, life and their shooting power to find the variant that's most fun.
Usually each time you play, a new scene will be randomly generated. But it's often better to create your own scene (choose "Edit" in the scene dialog). Have a look on the scenes that have come with the distribution (in the "scenes" subdirectory) for examples.
