Xfce4 Volstatus Icon is an open source software that resides in the system tray area and acts as a helper for easily and quickly ejecting removable devices from your system. The software is free for download and use, and can be installed on any GNU/Linux operating system (32-bit and 64-bit).

By default, Xfce4 Volstatus Icon is a daemon that runs in the background and monitors removable drivers. When a removable media is inserted, an icon will appear in the system tray, allowing users to easily, efficiently and safely unmount (eject) the volume(s), without needing to open the Xfce Terminal or the Thunar file manager.

The project has been designed to work only with the Xfce desktop environment, but we have successfully test it under other open source desktop environments, such as GNOME, MATE, LXDE and Cinnamon.

To install Xfce4 Volstatus on your PC, you will have to download the latest release from Softpedia, save the file on your Home dir, unpack it, open a Terminal app, go to the location where you’ve extracted the archive file, run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the program, and then run the ‘sudo make install’ command to install it.

Taking a look under the hood of the Xfce4 Volstatus Icon project, we can notice that it has been written entirely in the C programming language, using the GTK+ GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface.

The GTK+ 2.10.0 or later, libxfce4util 4.4.0 or higher, libxfcegui4 4.4.0 or higher, dbus-glib 0.70 or later, hal-storage 0.5.7.1 or higher, exo-hal 0.3.2 or higher, supporting the HAL daemon, as well as a usable system tray plugin for the panel are required for the program to run.
